Spiritual Competency and Cultural Sensitivity (at the American Psychological Association Conference)
This workshop presents research and provides training in clinical assessment and interventions that addresses religious and spiritual issues as part of culturally competent therapy practice. The principal knowledge, skills and values of spiritual competency covered in this workshop include how to:
1. Conduct religious and spiritual assessments,
2. Describe the empirical research on spirituality/religion in patient care,
3. Explain the role of spirituality as a coping resource among individuals with mental disorders and physical illnesses,
4. Identify specific religious and spiritual problems that present in therapy,
5. Explain how spiritual competency is part of overall cultural competency,
6. More effectively use spiritual competencies in therapy, and
7. Detect ethical issues in using spiritual interventions.
