by Helen Schucman

On the importance of numinous experience in the alchemy of individuation

by Murray Stein

( ) http://www.murraystein.com/articles.shtml;
Reviewed/recommended by Rosemarie Anderson More a mystic than a psychologist, I have long suspected Carl G. Jung's use of ‘‘the Holy'' to further human individuation as a form of spiritual materialism. For me, the Sacred is Other within which all creation lives and beyond appropriation. However, recently, I have read analyst Murray Stein's On the Importance of Numinous Experience in the Alchemy of Individuation. In this short essay, Stein compares Rudolf Otto's mysticism in Das Heilige (The Idea of the Holy) and Jung's mystical psychology. Stein's articulation of the similarities and differences between Otto's and Jung's understanding of the numinous has helped me accommodate Jung's alchemy of individuation as sacred in-dwelling..

The Book of Job

by Stephen Mitchell

(1994) ;
Reviewed/recommended by Stanley Krippner The Book of Job has had a life-long impact on me. Written in about the sixth century BCE, Alfred Lord Tennyson called it ‘‘the greatest poem of ancient and modern times.'' It poses existential questions, most speci?cally about why God allows dreadful things to happen. After the Deity informs him that his queries are incapable of human understanding, Job admits that there are ‘‘things beyond me which I did not know.'' This book is complex, open to several interpretations, and offers no direct answers. But it has kept me from expecting life to be fair or just, and – above all – has kept me humble regarding what I know or think that I know..

The outsider (Reissue ed.)

by Colin Wilson

(1987) Penguin Putman; New York, NY
Reviewed/recommended by Stanley Krippner Colin Wilson's The Outsider has never gone out of print since it was published in 1956. Its central message is that one's ordinary state of consciousness generates a diminished sense of self, not a transcendental self. Because the Outsider ‘‘sees too deeply and too much,'' his or her best recourse is transcendence. This book was written by Wilson when he was my age, and I could identify with many of his insights. Wilson and I eventually became close friends, and I consider his book a cornerstone of the transpersonal, humanistic, and existential psychologies..
